The time chasers
And off I go … 2.0.
A whistleblower from a paddlers magazine revealed my project to two professional US race paddlers. They wanted to make a competition with me who is the first to surround the lake Baikal in East Siberia.
You know America first!
I am going to meet them and see what kind of Aukies (German-Southwest Africa slang) they are.
It turned out that those blokes are bloody good, lean and trained paddlers with slim sea kayaks in screaming color like turquoise blue and California sunshine yellow. Indicating to everybody on the lake: Here we come. I could never match with, even if I wanted with my expedition kayak, 10 kilos of stored fat in my body and a silvery-dolphin grey “hiding kayak”.
On the other hand I had food for 70 days stored in my “battleship”; they had no food, well almost, and storage room for only two-three days.
I wonder where their back-up stations are along the lake as there is almost nothing like shopping center America style here – and north-east… Up north there ain’t nothing except bears, reindeers, dark woods and may be even a Siberian tiger on a walk-about until the lake’s tip – some 1,000 klicks away.
Anyway we met and after a short snuffling, and we decided to kayak together for a leg or two …
To be continued …

Kayak Adventure
in Siberia
The first solo circumnavigation
of Lake Baikal
Detlev Henschel
English translation by Philip Brown
This e-book is a narrative about a 1,250-mile long solo kayak adventure on the 1-mile deep Lake Baikal in East Siberia, Russia. The clash of different cultures (Russians, Evenks, Buryats) and the wonders of a not always safe unique and pristine nature with hungry bugging bears, extreme climate, ‘Russian improvisation‘ pushed this experience to the limit for man and equipment. (The adventures can be seen on his YouTube Channel 1life4outdoor.)
